Word Around the Fire

**Overheard around the soldier’s camp**

Spring turns to summer, summer to fall, fall to winter, and winter to spring once more. The changing of the seasons is familiar and constant. This year, it seems like winter came late and is giving no signs of letting up. It feels appropriate as our plans to move forward are stymied by a sudden proclamation from Antioch.

Yes, it seems like the sudden re-emergence of winter just echoes the hardships that Jericho has faced since leaving their homes. Hope being snatched away with cold weather, cold acts, cold declarations, and finally cold comforts.

As if the season is reflecting the state of things, The Empire appoints a new Council member whose first act was to end the life of our former. The Empire says Antioch is in charge, and Jericho’s history with them is not so great. They seize their resources and deliver a vague warning of worse things to come. The Empire sends a General’s daughter to play at leadership, and what kind of person will she be?

I will be glad when we rotate back to a posting in the capitol. I have had more than enough of Creepy kids talking in their sleep and about incidents they could not possibly know about. Then the sky rips open and the glowing orbs of light appear. Now those symbols are appearing everywhere. We are no cowards, but we deserve a break. Let these people deal with the pot they stirred. I admit that a Dance will be a nice background to the mess of politics that has to happen for things to get back on track.

I hope everything sorts itself out soon and these people can get to a place where they can build proper homes. If The Empire and the weather don’t sort themselves out soon, this town will be quite literally and figuratively a Frozen Asset.
